Walter William Miles was born 16th January 1898 in Eling, the eldest child of Walter Ernest Miles and Rose Drew. He was one of four children and the only one to survive infancy.  His siblings were Dorothy Rose Cissila 1900-1901, Doris Nellie 1903-1913, and Ernest Albert 1905-1906.

During his childhood years Walter first attended a private school before joining Eling on the 12th July 1904, he left on 1st May 1909 to attend another private school.

The Miles family would have been quite well known in their day, running several pubs in the local area. Walters grandfather William Aaron Miles ran the Railway Inn on the High Street in 1881, and the King Rufus in Eling in 1891. His father running the Station Hotel in 1901, and the Elephant and Castle in 1911.

On the 14th December 1918 The Hampshire Advertiser reported:-

Miles – On December 6th 1918 at 1st Southern Hospital, Birmingham. From pneumonia following wounds on the Western Front. Walter William Miles, Life Guards, dearly beloved and only son of Mr and Mrs Miles 33 Clarendon Road, Shirley Southampton aged 20 years.
